The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
